For twenty-five years, Morgan Hooper has been a student of Japanese sword arts. Originally from Long Island, New York, he began training in kendo, Japanese fencing, when he was a teenager. Many years later, he established his own martial arts school Enshinkan Dojo in Long Island City. Celebrating its tenth anniversary this year, Enshinkanoffers weekly training sessions in kendo and iaido. Today, Hooper took some time to talk about the New York kendo community and how it rebuilt itself after the recent pandemic.All images provided by Morgan Hooper.

MAYTT: How and when did you come to find both kendo and iaido?
MH: I began studying kendo in , just as I was turning fourteen. At that time, I was connected to a gentleman named Tom Hooper Sensei, a kendo and iaidoinstructor in Massachusetts affiliated with Ken-Zen Dojo. Though we have no family relation, there was a bit of serendipity in that connection. He introduced me to my first teacher, Moses Becerra Sensei, on Long Island.
