What a treasure this production is. Beautiful to look at and to listen to, true to the text but not over-reverent, well cast and incisively acted, thoughtful and intelligent, it’s a finely crafted piece of magic that catches the wonder at the heart of the play.
I think The Tempest is a play that can suit many ideas but can often come across as unbalanced if its different aspects and shifts in tone aren’t sculpted into a coherent whole. What’s so exciting here is that Dominic Dromgoole’s production does everything well: the emotion, the magic, the romance, and the comedy.
This beautiful little theatre in this production seems like the perfect setting for a play taking place on a distant magical island: the candlelight gives scenes an otherworldly sheen, and the stage is so small that we could be anywhere. Stephen Warbeck’s enchanting small-scale score strikes just the right notes of magic and melancholy; his compositions for Ariel are delicate and memorable. And the space is used so well here, with sound from inside the auditorium and out, characters entering from above and below, and the occasional intrusion into the audience. There are some moments in the play that seem made for this theatre, like when the doors at the back of the stage open to reveal in their arches
