In 1897, archaeologist Jacques De Morgan spent just fifteen days excavating a large mud-brick tomb at the site of Naqada, in Upper Egypt. Inscriptions within the tomb revealed that it belonged to a woman named Neith-hotep. Neith-hotep was the wife of King Narmer and the mother of King Hor-Aha, the rulers traditionally credited with unifying Egypt into a single nation. A member of Egypt’s first royal family, living over 5000 years ago, she is the earliest historically recorded woman in the world.
As De Morgan only took such a short amount of time to excavate the entire structure, it is unsurprising that he left behind plenty of material for Professor John Garstang to find in later excavations in 1904, much of it from the previous excavations spoil heaps. Material from the 1904 excavations is now housed in the Garstang Museum.
Unfortunately the delicate mudbrick superstructure of the tomb has not survived being exposed to the elements, and was completely lost some time after 1904. So all further research on this tomb has focused on the contents of the tomb recovered during the 1897 and 1904 excavations.
