THE FIRST HUNDRED YEARS
Calvary Group
In 1935, there was a division of opinion among the parishioners regarding the placing of the Calvary Group which was a gift to the parish from Dr. Lionel Peiris. This Group was installed in the Church without any reference to the parishioners. Some parishioners made representations to Bishop Mark Carpenter Gamier. The Bishop ruled as follows:—
- That the figures be veiled with curtains for one week in the month.
- This week be from the third Saturday to the fourth.
- The only exceptions to this rule are Good Friday (should it fall within the week specified) and Christmas Day.
The 75th Anniversary of the Church
The 75th anniversary of the consecration of the Church was celebrated from 26th December 1935 to 1st January 1936. Elaborate arrangements were made and a Jubilee Commemoration Committee of 300 members of the Parish and 8 Sub-Committees were appointed. At the request of the Executive Committee, P. M. A. Mendis and W. R. 0. Fernando, Hony. Joint Secretaries, addressed an appeal to all parishioners to help collect for the Jubilee Fund a sum of Rs 10.000/- by remitting their subscriptions to the Hony Treasurer, H. P, Dickman de Mel. A sum of Rs 7494.60 was collected.

When she retired from Hillwood College, she continued her social work in the Kandy District. Her compassion for the poor and destitute children inspired her noble spirit to establish a home for these unwanted destitute children. She pursued this idea relentlessly, and for this purpose she purchasedin 1926 “Bell vue” bungalow with approximately 4 acres of land adjoining Hillwood College, premises. This purchase was made with her own money – a legacy left by her sister Evelyn – whose name the Home now bears.
The site selected is unique. It overlooks the Kandy Lake and the Sri Dalada Maligawa and the evergreen Udawatte Forest Reserve. This idyllic spot with its numerous buildings now stands as an everlasting monument to the memory of the Founder.
Evelyn Nurseries was declared open in 1928 by His Excel
