An Interview with Anne McGinty
Just before everything shut down, I had the opportunity to interview one of my favorite composers, Anne McGinty. As a young band director, I programmed a lot of her music with younger bands. In a small economically challenged district in Virginia, I was grateful for the Queenwood books containing several of her compositions. Years later I had the opportunity to program one of her advanced pieces, Victorious, with the Mid-Atlantic Wind Symphony.
Whether she is writing educational music for young bands, creating challenging commissioned compositions for the Army bands, or more recently composing for chamber ensembles, her music is filed with emotion and she makes a conscious effort to utilize every voice in the ensemble. When playing her compositions, every member of the ensemble knows they are contributing to the performance.
Many band directors know her music for bands, however, I encourage to look at her compositions for Chamber Ensembles at www.McGintyMusic.com
While you're there, be sure to sign up for her news letter. There are some amazing compositions available there. Like Aamano Music, all of the titles atMcGinty Musicare available as PDF downloads. It may prove to be a great resource during the school c
