As the world lays Michael Jackson to rest, millions of Africans are among those grieving. Africa, just like everywhere else, was shocked by Jackson’s death. On June 26, a day after his death, no piece of news was more important in the African media than the sudden departure of the “King of Pop.”
For days afterward, stories about him occupied the front pages of most publications across the continent as radio and the television perpetually played his songs. A journalist friend in Johannesburg observed that soccer-crazy South Africans even ignored Confederations Cup matches to tune in to news of Jackson’s death.
A lot of Africans who were in their teens when Jackson shot to stardom still hold fond memories of how much he influenced their lives. Friends from Uganda and Lesotho recall how after “Thriller” they let their hair grow so that they could perm it, just like the way Jackson appeared on the album cover. They tell stories of pants that were taken back to the tailors so that they could be cut a bit shorter to mirror Jackson’s.
Another friend from Tanzania still remembers the trouble he went through to learn a few of Jackson’s dancing moves so that he could impress a girl at a school dance.

The late Brenda Fassie’s producer and legendary musician Chicco Twala says he spent more than R1 million to help rehabilitate his “drug-addicted” son, Longwe Twala.
Last week Chicco Twala handed over his acid head so to the Diepkloof cop shop after he allegedly stole a cellphone from his friend’s son, Brian Phofedi, in order to feed his junkie ways.

According to Sowetan Chicco admitted that Longwe has been battling drug addiction for over 15 years, which is almost half his age.
The paper further reports that an angry Chicco Twala said his son had stolen recording equipment in excess of R300 000 from him to feed his drug addiction.
“Longwe has been doing this for years, and it was time for him to face the consequences [of his actions]. This really made me mad because Longwe was on bail for another theft incident. When he was arrested, my sister bailed him out and I warned her about this. I said to her you should have left him there.
